Mrs. Marilyn Eze, is a Lawyer, Chartered Secretary, Arbitrator and Notary Public. with almost 20 years of Corporate/Commercial Legal practice in Nigeria’s Energy Sector. She has had extensive work experience in Nigeria’s energy value chain, in areas such as: Power, Gas, Energy Retailing, Refining, Renewables Upstream Policy, Regulation, Corporate Governance and Dispute Resolution.
Mrs. Eze has two second class upper degrees from the Nigeria Law School, University of Nigeria and an LLM degree from University of Warwick in International Commercial Law with specialization in Corporate Governance and Financial Regulation. She is a recipient of the prestigious British Chevening Scholarship She is also an African Arbitration Academy Fellow (2022 Cohort).
She has been Company Secretary/Legal Adviser of Gas Aggregation Company of Nigeria (GACN) and has covered the role of Company Secretary/Legal Adviser for NNPC Retail Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of NNPCL. She has had work experience in London city firms like Hogan Lovells LLP, Stephson Harwood and Slaughter and May.
She is Chairperson of ICSAN’s Sectoral Group on Energy. She also is the Secretary of Nigerian Bar Association – Section on Business Law (NBA-SBL) Committee on Energy, Natural Resources and Environment. She seats on the Advisory Board of Lagos Court of Arbitration- YAN and the current Legal Adviser, Chevening Alumni Association of Nigeria. She is a member of the International Bar Association Committee on Energy, Environment, Natural Resources, and Infrastructure Law Section (SEERIL) and its Corporate Counsel Forum and Arbitration Committee.
In 2012, she served as Technical Adviser- Legal in the Gas to Power Team of the Presidential Task Force on Power. She has also served as the Senior Technical Assistant to the Commission Secretary/Legal Adviser of the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission. She is a Fellow of Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators of London and Nigeria, and a member of Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb, UK). She is a contributory author for ICSAN’s Company Secretary’s Handbook on Board Evaluation (Nov,2021). She is also an IFC certified Corporate Governance Trainer. In 2016 she was Chairperson of the Young Members Group (YMG) of CIArb, Abuja Chapter.
A recipient of several awards, she received the commendation certificate of the Speaker of the UK House of Lords the RT Hon. Lord Fowler, for her participation in the 2017 United Kingdom House of Lords Chambers Debate on UK’s International Relations. She received the commendation of the National Oil Company for her role in its Lubricant Product Launch and the National Oil Company’s Long Service Award. She also received an award of Service from GACN years after leaving the company. She was awarded one of Africa's 50 Most Promising Arbitrators 2020. In 2017, received an award for Enterprise Mentoring by the Princes Trust Charity, UK, (founded by King Charles). She is an award recipient by ESQ’s 40 under 40, Nigerian Rising Star Awards. She also received an Award of Excellence by her peers -the Nigerian Law School Class of 2005.
She has spoken at different fora, some of which include Guest Speaker at the Hong Kong Chartered Governance Institute in collaboration with Ernst and Young in June 2022, Speaker at Society for Petroleum Engineers Annual International Conference and Exhibition held in Lagos, in July 2023, Convener/Moderator – ICSAN Energy Sector Series Webinar, Theme; “Governance Perspectives on ESG; Petroleum Industry Act 2021 on context” in conjunction with Hogan Lovells, UK & Banwo & Ighodalo, Speaker/Delegate at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) UK in April 2018, Guest Speaker at her Secondary School 2023 Graduation event among several others. A keen art enthusiast, she loves theatre performances and travelling.
